Hang in there, it's going to be OK
Did you know that suicide rates double during the holidays and in the days and weeks immediately thereafter?
It's no wonder, with all of the heightened emotions that those who have suffered a loss feel a corresponding spike in pain at the precise time those around them seem to be glowing with joy.
For some, it's the departure of the holidays when things become particularly hairy as the sparkle of the season fades and the reality of freshly acquired (or increased) debt comes more clearly into view.
That's why I've chosn to make this somewhat-peculiar posting on Christmas Day, in hopes of, well, giving someone hope who just might need it most on this day more so than any other.
Just yesterday, while driving with my two youngest children to meet with most of their older siblings, the golden voice of Bing Crosby brought tears to my eyes as I related to Michael and Ashley that hearing him sing is just like hearing my late father sing. I believe my father could easily have stepped into his show business shoes, I said, had he not been struggling to support my mother and siblings in various radio jobs across the Western United States.
Given the choice, I like to think my father would make the same sacrifices to be a husband and father to our family rather than lead the glamorous life Crosby lived under the white-hot spot light (no disrespect intended to Crosby's family life, which I am not familiar with and in no way mean to demean in the least).
